It's also well worth keeping in mind that in the original Isaac, Blue Baby was the super hard hidden character behind whom the cool items were gated. Blue Baby's solution of never having any red hearts is extreme and unnecessary. But that's well within one's control by the endgame. Really, the worst case is when you trade away most, but not all, of your red hearts. But they also act as a replenishing HP source in a period with the highest damage. In the late game, red health prevents no-HP items from triggering. Furthermore, the items are some of the most damaging in the game. This allows a player to get ahead of the curve in both items and consumables.
In the early game, red health is used for devil deals, blood banks and feeding beggars. Let's look at this from an early and late game perspective. Consequently, people think that red hearts are bad, especially as they prevent Polaroid, Negative and Whore from triggering. Red health does not get used much as health in a good run or by skilled players. I think Blue Baby is popular amongst those who misunderstand red heart strategy.
